New Moon x Sagittarius: Cosmic Growing Pains & the Art of Adaptation
Below is an excerpt from my 'Sagittarius Season Workbook' available HERE.
“Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience. Growth, whether of a tree or a soul, is not a matter of haste but of the unseen forces shaping their roots, enduring trials to blossom with intention.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
As the New Moon in Sagittarius lights up our skies on November 30th, 2024, the world feels ready to dream big and aim higher. Sagittarius, ruled by expansive Jupiter, encourages boundless ambition and the pursuit of truth. Fittingly, this energy coincides with the Cambridge Dictionary selecting manifest as its 2024 Word of the Year—a term embodying Sagittarius’s optimistic ethos. But as much as we want to believe in our power to manifest anything, this New Moon's astrological context offers a reality check: ambition must be paired with discipline, or dreams risk dissolving into wishful thinking.
While the Sun and Moon meet at 9° Sagittarius, casting an adventurous glow, they form a tense square with Saturn in Pisces, placing obstacles in the path of unbridled enthusiasm. Saturn demands structure and realism, forcing us to ask whether our goals are built on solid foundations. Meanwhile, a wide square to Neptune muddles clarity, tempting us into escapism or idealism.
Adding to the mix, Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius fuels reflection on past plans, particularly those involving travel, learning, or belief systems. Opposing Jupiter in Gemini, Mercury highlights the push-pull between lofty ideas and practical details. A supportive sextile to Pluto in Aquarius, however, offers depth and transformation, making this lunation a potent time to plant meaningful seeds that grow over time.
A Dash of Hope, A Pinch of Reality
This lunation takes place at 9° Sagittarius, a mutable fire sign. Sagittarius energy is expansive, adventurous, and idealistic—perfect for setting intentions that stretch the imagination. Yet, this New Moon comes with a twist. Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius has us revisiting old beliefs and rethinking plans, while a square to Saturn in Pisces demands we temper ambition with realism.
Saturn’s influence is a wet blanket on Sagittarius’s exuberance, but it also offers an opportunity to build dreams on a solid foundation. Meanwhile, Neptune’s involvement adds a dreamy, almost otherworldly quality to this lunation, urging us to explore our spiritual side but cautioning us against illusions. Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, sits opposite the New Moon in Gemini, emphasizing the need to balance our expansive aspirations with grounded communication and practical knowledge.
Across the Globe, Within the Soul
Globally, this New Moon could amplify discussions about education, justice, and international relations. On a personal level, it invites us to reconnect with our sense of purpose while recognizing where blind spots might undermine progress. If the Sagittarius energy urges us to gallop toward our dreams, Saturn and Neptune remind us to stay tethered to reality.
To work harmoniously with this lunation, begin by reflecting.Sagittarius teaches us that life is a journey, and this New Moon encourages us to set intentions for where we want to go next—figuratively or literally. Take a moment to journal about your beliefs, dreams, and the stories you’re ready to release. We have a whole section of deep insightful journaling prompts in my Sagittarius Season Workbook, so scroll down if you want to check it out! I created a guided meditation journey specifically for the themes of this season, it’s available for instant download HERE.
Lean into activities that align with Sagittarius’s adventurous spirit, like learning a new skill, planning future travel (with flexibility!), or diving into philosophical or spiritual exploration. Incorporate fire rituals, such as lighting a candle while envisioning your goals, or write down old fears and burn them to symbolically clear the way for fresh starts.
“Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space. Invite one to stay. To hope is not to ignore reality but to choose the belief that even in the hardest of circumstances, the light of change is possible if we are willing to meet the challenge.”
— Maya Angelou
