Temperance Tarot Card: The Alchemy of Balance
Below is an excerpt from my 'Sagittarius Season Workbook' available HERE.
"There is a secret bond between slowness and memory, between speed and forgetting. The longer we linger, the more fully we experience the richness of life, for it is in slowness that we gather the threads of who we are. To rush past our contradictions and complexities is to miss the alchemy that transforms chaos into art, pain into wisdom, and life into meaning." — Milan Kundera
As we traverse Sagittarius Season, a time brimming with curiosity and adventure, the Temperance card offers an apt companion. It encourages us to blend fire with water, the spiritual with the material, and our ambitions with our limits. This card reminds us that growth is not linear and that the path to enlightenment is rarely a straight line; it is a dance of integration, trial, and grace.
Temperance, the 14th card of the Major Arcana, is an invitation to step into the transformative art of balance. Tied to Sagittarius in astrology, it embodies the mutable fire sign’s expansive energy, asking us to reconcile contradictions and embrace the process of becoming. Sagittarius is the seeker, forever aiming its arrow toward truth and higher understanding, and Temperance mirrors this quest by offering us the tools to harmonize the chaos of life into something sublime. It does not promise quick answers or easy fixes. Instead, it invites us to engage with the ongoing alchemy of existence—a process that requires patience, courage, and faith.
Decoding the Symbolism of Temperance
The visual language of the Temperance card, particularly in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, is rich with layered meanings. At its center is an angel, often described as genderless or androgynous, embodying the dissolution of binaries. This celestial figure, with radiant wings and an aura of serenity, stands with one foot on land and the other in water, symbolizing the meeting of the physical and emotional realms.
The angel holds two chalices, pouring liquid between them in a seemingly impossible arc. This act of blending defies gravity and hints at the alchemical process of synthesis—the creation of something entirely new from disparate elements. Behind the figure, a winding path leads toward a golden crown, a beacon of spiritual enlightenment and divine purpose. The sun rising over distant mountains reinforces this theme of illumination, suggesting that balance and harmony are prerequisites for accessing higher truths.
The angel’s stance, the flowing water, and the interplay of symbols convey that harmony is an active process, requiring continual adjustment and engagement.
The origins of Temperance as a concept are deeply rooted in classical philosophy and Christian theology. As one of the four cardinal virtues, it was traditionally associated with self-restraint and moderation. Medieval art often depicted Temperance as a serene figure mixing water and wine, a metaphor for the importance of measured enjoyment and the taming of excess.
In early tarot decks like the Tarot de Marseille, Temperance retained this association with moral discipline but began to hint at deeper, more mystical themes. The act of mixing liquids, for instance, could be interpreted as a nod to alchemy—a process not just of transformation but of achieving spiritual enlightenment.
With the advent of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot in the early 20th century, Temperance evolved into a card of profound spiritual significance. The angel, the impossible flow of liquid, and the path to the golden crown all point to the idea of integration—not just of opposites but of the self with the divine.
Contemporary tarot interpretations have further expanded on these ideas, celebrating Temperance as a card of fluidity and inclusivity. Many modern readers highlight its relevance to nonbinary identities and its role in dissolving rigid categories, whether they pertain to gender, identity, or spirituality.
"Change is never easy, and it is often messy. We are rivers, not stones; we flow, and in that flow, we erode the sharp edges of our past selves. To become who we are meant to be, we must allow ourselves to be shaped by both the fire of passion and the coolness of introspection, trusting that the currents will lead us to balance." — Clarissa Pinkola Estés
Within the journey of the Major Arcana, Temperance is a card of pivotal transformation. It follows the Death card, which represents endings, and precedes the Devil, a card of temptation and shadow work. This positioning is significant: Temperance serves as a bridge, helping us integrate the lessons of release (Death) and prepare for the challenges of confronting our deepest fears (Devil).
After the transformative upheaval of Death, Temperance offers a moment of recalibration. It is the chrysalis stage—a time to process what has been lost, make peace with change, and begin to build something new. It is a reminder that the journey of self-discovery is not about erasing contradictions but about learning to coexist with them.
Temperance also holds echoes of earlier cards, such as the Wheel of Fortune and Justice. The Wheel teaches us to accept life’s cycles, while Justice urges us to seek fairness and clarity. Temperance synthesizes these lessons, inviting us to find equilibrium not by imposing order but by embracing life’s inherent fluidity.
As we approach the Devil and the Tower, cards that challenge our foundations and force us to confront uncomfortable truths, Temperance equips us with the tools to face these trials with grace. It reminds us that balance is not about avoiding extremes but about navigating them with intention and trust.
The Alchemical Heart of Temperance
The act of pouring liquid between chalices is more than a visual metaphor—it is a representation of alchemy, a practice that seeks to transform the mundane into the divine. In alchemical traditions, opposites must come together to create the philosopher’s stone, a symbol of ultimate enlightenment.
Similarly, Temperance asks us to bow down to the wisdom of holding opposing energies in our hands at the same time, blending the seemingly incompatible aspects of our lives: passion and logic, action and rest, joy and sorrow. This process is not about compromise or dilution; it is about creating something greater than the sum of its parts.
Alchemy also teaches us that transformation requires time. Just as metals are tempered through cycles of heating and cooling, we too are refined through the trials of life. Temperance reminds us to be patient with this process, to trust that the challenges we face are part of our evolution.
Temperance in Daily Life Reading
When Temperance appears in a reading, it often signals a need for balance and integration. Imagine, for instance, a person who has been pouring all their energy into their career, neglecting their health and relationships in the process. Temperance would ask them to step back and reevaluate, to consider how they might create a rhythm that allows space for both ambition and connection.
In relationships, Temperance might appear when two people are struggling to reconcile their differences. Consider a couple where one partner thrives on routine and stability, while the other craves spontaneity and adventure. Instead of viewing these traits as incompatible, Temperance invites them to find a middle ground.
Even in the small moments of daily life, Temperance can offer guidance. Picture someone overwhelmed by the pressure to make a drastic life change—quitting their job, ending a relationship, or moving to a new city. Rather than rushing into action, Temperance would encourage them to experiment with smaller steps, such as exploring new hobbies, having open conversations, or taking short trips to test the waters.
Temperance is a reminder that balance is not a fixed state but an ongoing practice. It asks us to approach life with curiosity and flexibility, to view challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth.
Journaling Prompts for Temperance
- What areas of your life feel out of harmony? How might you begin to restore balance?
- Reflect on a time when you successfully blended opposing forces—what did it teach you about yourself?
- How do you approach change? Do you resist it, embrace it, or seek to control it?
Advice for Embracing Temperance
To embody the energy of Temperance, start by cultivating mindfulness. This might involve setting aside time each day for quiet reflection, journaling, or meditation. Use this space to check in with yourself: What feels balanced? What feels out of alignment?
Another way to channel Temperance is through creative and active exploration: taking up a practice that involves blending elements, such as cooking, painting, or music. For example, experimenting with flavors in the kitchen can mirror the alchemical process of the card, teaching you to harmonize different ingredients into a cohesive whole.
Temperance also calls us to embrace rest as a vital part of balance. In a culture that prizes productivity, intentional and unapologetic rest can feel like a powerful act of rebellion. Try carving out moments of stillness, whether it’s through a long walk in nature, a restorative yoga session, or simply sitting in silence with a cup of coffee.
Finally, seek opportunities for collaboration and dialogue. Temperance thrives in spaces where different perspectives come together. Whether it’s a group project, a family discussion, or a community initiative, look for ways to blend your strengths with those of others, creating solutions that honor everyone’s needs.
Temperance is not a card of quick fixes or easy answers. Its lessons unfold slowly, asking us to engage with life’s complexities and contradictions. It challenges us to find beauty in the in-between spaces, to trust the process of alchemy, and to embrace balance not as a destination but as a way of being.
As we move through Sagittarius Season, let Temperance be your guide. Allow it to inspire you to explore, integrate, and transform. In its quiet yet profound way, this card reminds us that harmony is something we create—moment by moment, choice by choice.
May Temperance lead you to a place of peace, possibility, and profound connection, both with yourself and the world around you.
